Samuel Odom, Jr., a loving husband, father, and veteran, passed away on November 13, 2024, at the age of 76. Born on August 25, 1948, in Macon, Georgia, he was the cherished son of Samuel Odom, Sr. and Annie Mae Jones Odom. Raised in Macon, Sam exemplified dedication and perseverance from a young age.
At 17, he was drafted into the Army while still attending Ballard Hudson High School, beginning a distinguished military career that lasted 25 years. Sam honorably served in the Vietnam War and later in Desert Storm, retiring as a First Sergeant. His commitment to the military was unwavering, reflecting his deep sense of duty and loyalty.
After his retirement from the Army, Sam transitioned to a successful career as an A&P Licensed Mechanic, working for Atlantic Southeast Airlines and Bombardier, Inc. for more than 20 years. His work ethic and attention to detail made him a valued asset in the aviation industry.
A faithful member of Aletheia Baptist Church in Macon, Sam was actively involved in Bible studies and prayer services, reflecting his strong spiritual convictions. He was known for his enthusiasm for life; he loved fishing, karate, and was an avid runner, embracing physical activity in all forms. Sam's passion infused every aspect of his life—he approached each endeavor with extraordinary intensity and unwavering conviction. Whether in his work, faith, or hobbies, he believed wholeheartedly in giving everything he had. His dedication was not just a trait but a guiding principle, inspiring those around him to embrace their own pursuits with the same fervor.
A dedicated family man, Sam was a great provider and a motivator for his loved ones, encouraging them to pursue their dreams. His deep love for his family was evident in every interaction, and he leaves behind a legacy of hard work, integrity, and unwavering support.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by siblings, Melvin Odom, Calvin Odom, Alonzo Odom, Marion Odom, Elisha Odom, and Alberta Wilder.
Samuel is survived by his loving wife of 47 years, Elvira; children, Leticia Odom, Marlon Odom and Mesha Odom; granddaughter, Maya Taylor; and siblings, Mary Gibson, Eloise McColumn, and Albert Wilder.
Visitation will be on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at Aletheia Baptist Church. Afterward, Samuel will be laid to rest in Georgia Veterans Memorial Cemetery.
