Alene (Peacock) McGowan joined her beloved husband in heaven on Thursday, May 12, 2022, at the age of 94. The daughter of Mary Edith (Jones) and Daniel Peacock was the youngest of nine born on June 27, 1927. She grew up mainly in Treutlen County and moved throughout the South due to the Great Depression. Alene worked at the Telephone Company in Macon, Georgia, before meeting the love of her life, William “Bill” McGowan. The two were married in 1953 and she continued to work at Palmer Tire Company before starting her family.
Alene’s greatest joy was her three children. She served her community for 25 years as the head of the First Baptist Church Warner Robins nursery. Alene was an excellent seamstress and made most of her girls’ clothes. She passed that love of making things on to her daughters. In her later years, Alene had no greater joy than her grandchildren. Beloved by all who knew her, her family remembers her lovingly for her kindness and humility. Everyone remembers her for fried chicken, rice, and gravy and the best biscuits in the South. Few knew Alene had a hidden talent to never miss a shot when playing basketball. When she sighed, she used to say “2-9-6” from her days connecting people at the Telephone Company. In her later years of life, she was lovingly cared for by Ms. Annie Greer and Ms. Tawney Neal.
Alene was preceded in death by her siblings: Alice Naomi (Doshe), Otis, Marvin, Will, Ivy, Roscoe, Ruth and Ruby, and her son-in-law Lynn Peters. She is survived by her children: Mary Jayne Peters, Marsha Hall and her husband, Thomas, and William “Bo” McGowan and his wife, Kelley McGowan. Alene also leaves four granddaughters: Hannah (Hall) Gordon and her husband, Jesse, Carson (McGowan) White and her husband, Jeffrey, Amelia (Hall) Spinks and her husband, Clayton, and Bailey McGowan; and four great-grandchildren: Hollis, Esime, Liam, and Chandler.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, May 15, 2022 from 2:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 3:00 p.m., in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Alene will be laid to rest next to Bill in Magnolia Park Cemetery following the service.
