Alton Eugene Buffington

June 4, 1958 — December 29, 2021

Alton Eugene Buffington of Kathleen passed into the arms of his heavenly Father in the early morning hours of Wednesday, December 29, 2021 at the age of 63.

A Macon native, Gene graduated from A.R. Willingham High School in 1976. Shortly after high school, he joined the United States Navy where he was a Gunners Mate on the USS Virginia, reaching the rank of Construction Mechanic (Gasoline) Petty Officer 2nd Class. After his time in the military, Gene worked for Southern Chemical and then spent 23 years employed at YKK. He also spent several years as a traveling mechanic for Ingersoll Rand. During his time at YKK, Gene spent his nights working in customer service for Home Depot in the electrical and hardware departments. Never one to be idle, he also worked as a machine mechanic at Perdue Farms and at Pactiv. Gene was the epitome of a hard worker who loved making things for his wife and others out of wood. He was one of those men who was handy and could fix just about anything. His family was very important to him and he adored the time he was able to spend with them. Listening to Christian radio stations was one of his favorite pastimes. He was a member of Friendship Baptist Church.

In addition to his parents, Charles Terrell and Marjorie (Chasteen) Buffington, Alton was preceded in death by his stepfather, Jack Morris; brothers, Ken Buffington, Kethe Buffington, Joe Boggs; sister, Caroll Sawyer; sister-in-law, Jeanne Buffington; and grandson, Steven Eugene Buffington.

He is survived by his wife of 36 years, Wanda Buffington of Kathleen; daughter, Ashley Buffington of Byron; brothers, Terry Buffington of Dallas, Georgia, Walter Buffington (Margaret) of Jonesboro, Georgia,; brothers-in-law, Kenny Jackson (Barbara) of Kathleen and Wendell Sawyer of Hinesville, Georgia; sister-in-law, Marian Boggs; in-laws, John and Jeanette Jackson of Kathleen; as well as several nieces and nephews.
