Ann Benton Culpepper

September 18, 1926 — November 16, 2004

Ann Benton Culpepper of Warner Robins, Georgia, died Tuesday, November 16 th 2004. She closed her life with a true, inner peace and gratitude for always being blessed with a loving family and good friends. Memorial Services will be held Saturday, November 20, 2004, at 11A.M. at First United Methodist Church in Warner Robins. Interment will follow at 2:30 P.M. in Tippettville Baptist Church Cemetery in Dooly County. The family welcomes friends to visit Friday evening, November 19, 2004, at McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M.

Mrs. Culpepper was born in Starrsville, Georgia (Newton County), the daughter of the late Woodfin Grady Benton and Lillian Faulkner Benton. Her brother, Charles O. Benton, and sister, Dorothy Benton Campbell preceded her in death. She is survived by her sons, Jack Lanier., (Rosemary) Culpepper, Jr., of Bonaire and James Benton (Penny) Culpepper, of Warner Robins; daughter, Dianne (Stuart) MacGuire, of Savannah; grandchildren, Channon (Henry) Rowe of Savannah, Brent Culpepper of Athens, Carrie Culpepper of Bonaire, Ben and Anne Culpepper of Warner Robins, Sam, Isabel, and Jack MacGuire of Savannah; great-grandchildren, Abby and Olivia Rowe, of Savannah; and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Culpepper earned a BA degree from Shorter College (Phi Sigma Alpha Honor Society), a master’s degree in Elementary Education from Mercer University, and a Specialist degree in Curriculum Supervision from the University of Georgia. From 1955-1965 she taught science at Agnes Barden Elementary School in Bibb County. She then served as Elementary Curriculum Director from 1965-1972, and was promoted to Director of Elementary Education where she served until 1979. From 1979 until retiring in 1992, she served as Assistant Superintendent of Elementary Education for Bibb County Public Schools. Additionally, from 1977 until 1997, Mrs. Culpepper served in various capacities as committee member and consultant for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. She saw many changes during her years with the school system and assumed the tremendous task of implementing the plan for integration for Bibb County Elementary Schools. Throughout her career, she never lost sight of the importance of the children she served. She was once quoted as saying, “To look at kids, and see understanding grow in their faces, to see that take place is what we’re all about. Children bring an enthusiasm to the world around them that you can’t find anywhere else.”

Mrs. Culpepper was active in Bloomfield United Methodist Church in Macon prior to moving to Warner Robins. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Warner Robins where she was active in the United Methodist Women and the Winmore Sunday School Class. She served as a church librarian and volunteered in the Food Pantry. Mrs. Culpepper was a member of the Macon Study Club, the Delta Kappa Gamma and Phi Delta Kappa Educational Honorary Societies as well as a number of other educational professional organizations.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Building Fund, 205 N Davis Drive, Warner Robins Georgia 31093.
