Annie Belle Sumner

April 26, 1905 — January 9, 2009

Annie Belle Cheaney Sumner, 103 years of life, went home to our Lord, Friday, January 9, 2009.Annie was a native Texan, born April 26, 1905, the eldest of four children of Nanette and William Cheaney, in Conroe Texas, but living 92 years in her beloved San Antonio.

Annie was predeceased by her siblings, Bessie Mae Cheaney Knott, Jack Riley Cheaney, Elbert Lee Cheaney and Johnnie Jean Elizabeth Dye, all of California; granddaughter, Wendeline (Wendy) Marie Sumner and her loving husband, Joe Fred Sumner of Sumner Mississippi. Annie and Joe were married April 30, 1944. In 1955, the couple adopted their son, John Michael (Mike) Sumner. Annie leaves behind her son, Mike and great granddaughter, Atlantya (Tya) Faustino, a sister-in-law, Marge Cheaney and niece, Susan Cheaney Finney.

Annie Belle graduated from Durham Business College after which she was employed by San Antonio Barber and Beauty Supply Company. She learned all aspects of the business and later purchased it. Annie was a very successful business woman, becoming President of both The Junior Business and Professional Women's Club and The Pilot Club. Due to her husband's sudden death in 1967, the business was sold. At that time, a new era in Annie's life began – devoted stewardship to her community and her church, Sunset Ridge Christian Church. She was President of Easter Seals Auxiliary, volunteering over fourteen thousand hours, Volunteer for Leukemia for four years and Arthritis Foundation for nine and one half years, for which she was awarded both the local and national Volunteer of the Year Award, J.C. Penney Volunteer Award and Retired Senior Volunteer Program Award.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, January 16, 2009, at Sunset Ridge Church of Christ, 95 Brees, San Antonio, Texas, with burial following at Sunset Memorial Park, 1701 Austin Highway, San Antonio, Texas. Donations in her memory may be made to Median Children's Home, 21300 State Highway 16 North, Medina, Texas 78055-3820.
