Mrs. Barbara Shaheen, a devoted and beloved servant of Houston County, passed away at the Houston Medical Center in the early morning hours of January 3, 2015. Born in Winsted, Connecticut to loving parents, George and Mary Aide, Mrs. Shaheen loved to perform Middle East dancing and was even featured on a television program starring Danny Thomas, where the vision for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital was birthed. Mrs. Shaheen shared her love of dancing by teaching lessons in numerous locations throughout Middle Georgia. Barbara later met and married her husband, Charles Kalil Shaheen, Jr. They were brought to Warner Robins by his service in the United States Air Force in 1964, and they immediately fell in love with Warner Robins and were pleased to be able to make Warner Robins their permanent home.
Along with her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, Ned Aide.
Mrs. Shaheen is survived by her two loving children, Donna (Joe) Kiefer, and Chuck (Virginia) Shaheen; her two adoring grandchildren, Joseph (Sonya) Kiefer and Kelly Kiefer, and one great-grandson, Luke Kiefer; all of Warner Robins; brother, Kelly (Joyce) Aide; many cousins, nieces, and nephews; and longtime friend, Ella Barnes.
Professionally, Mr. and Mrs. Shaheen owned and operated Shaheen Office Supply for thirty years. They also owned Legacy Fine China from 1992 to 2005, building Shaheen Plaza in 2001. Always one to push herself to exceed even her own expectations, she earned her Associates Degree from Georgia Military College in 2009. Barbara Shaheen's impact and service to her community is far reaching, including memberships in the Warner Robins Junior Woman's Club, the Business and Professional Women of Warner Robins Club, and the Rotary Club. She was a charter member and secretary of the Houston Medical Center Pink Ladies Auxiliary and served as the secretary of the Warner Robins Little Theatre, as well as a lifetime member and honorary board member. Mrs. Shaheen served several years as executive director of the Warner Robins Chamber of Commerce and held the office of Chairman in 2001. She served proudly on the committee which started the Houston Voluntary Medical Clinic, which serves the uninsured in our community. She also represented the Small Business Association as a member of SCORE, where she mentored newcomers in business as well as business owners who needed assistance. Mrs. Shaheen also served as the first secretary of the Downtown Development Committee for the City of Centerville and was Honorary Commander of the 19th Refueling Wing from 1995-2008 as well as one of the first Honorary Commanders for J-Stars from 1995-2003. She also served as President of the Southern Federation of Syrian Lebanese Clubs in 1995.
Because of her dedication and service to the causes and community she so greatly treasured, Mrs. Barbara Shaheen received numerous awards. She received spirit award by the American Heart Association in 1989. She was selected as the Woman of the Year in 1990 by the Business and Professional Women of Warner Robins and the Warner Robins Chamber Person of the Year in 1986. Mr. and Mrs. Shaheen were both jointly named as the citizens of the year from the Junior Chamber as well. in 1995, Mrs. Shaheen won the Mrs. Senior Warner Robins pageant and was third runner-up at Mrs. Senior Georgia. She was selected as the recipient of the Outstanding Girl Scout Award in 2007 and was awarded the the Charlie Jones Award from the Warner Robins Chamber of Commerce in 2009 and the Daughters of American Revolution Award (DAR) in 2011.
A rosary will be said at 6:00 p.m. with a visitation to follow until until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 5, 2016, at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 6, 2016 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A committal service will follow, where Mrs. Shaheen will be laid to rest next to her husband Chuck Shaheen, Jr. in Magnolia Park Mausoleum.
