Betty Lou Yelvington Poore, beloved wife of the late George Marvin Poore, Sr., was reunited with him in Heaven on Wednesday, March 6, 2024. Betty was born on September 30, 1939, in Covington, Tennessee. She was the oldest child of the late Malcolm S. Yelvington and Louella KuyKendall Yelvington.
Raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Betty graduated from Humes High School in 1957. During her high school years, Betty became best friends with Iris, George's sister, and worked part-time as a bookkeeper. Betty and George were married in Hernando, Mississippi, on February 10, 1960, and remained married for 53 years until George's passing.
As a supportive military wife, Betty lived in several cities stateside and abroad, including Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina, Ramey Air Force Base in Puerto Rico, Memphis, Tennessee, Steinbach, Germany and in Warner Robins, Georgia. In 1976, George retired from the United States Air Force and made Warner Robins their permanent location.
For nearly three decades, Betty served as a civilian on Robins Air Force Base. Her last assignment was as the 78th Medical Group Hospital Commander’s Secretary. She also served at NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) and was a devoted member of Disciples of Christ in Warner Robins.
Betty cherished her family and was a doting grandmother. She also had a beloved K-9 companion, “Scooter.” Betty will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her children, George M. Poore, Jr. and Cheryl A. Dilks (Michael); grandchildren, Michael “Tyler” Dilks and Dylan M. Dilks; and siblings, Malcolm S. “Skippy” Yelvington, Jr., Anthony “Tony” Yelvington, Philip Yelvington, and Patricia “Patsy” Kueider.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 9, 2024, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 10, 2024, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Betty Lou Poore will be laid to rest in the Magnolia Park Mausoleum.
