Bland Massie, Sr., of Fort Valley, Georgia, died suddenly on August 11, 2010, at the age of 82.
He was born in Saginaw, Michigan on March 27, 1928, grew up in Lynchburg, Virginia, and was an alumnus of Virginia Military Institute. He served our country in the United States Air Force during World War II and the Korean Conflict, receiving two bronze stars. In 1962, he and his family moved to Fort Valley, where he was employed at the Blue Bird Body Company until his retirement.
Survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Dolores P. Massie; sons, Dr. Bland Massie, Jr., and his wife, Jane, of Lynchburg, Virginia, and Michael E. Massie and his wife, Marcia, of Suwanee, Georgia; grandchildren, Bland III, Belle, Josh, Christin and Jay; great-granddaughter, Haven.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 15, 2010, at Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, 309 Central Avenue, Fort Valley, Georgia, with the Reverend Dr. Donald Tate officiating. A private burial will take place at the family cemetery in Massies Mill, Virginia. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations to Saint Andrews Episcopal Church, 309 Central Avenue, Fort Valley GA 31030 or Virginia Military Institute, Lexington VA 24450.
