He moved to Warner Robins as a child and graduated from Northside High School in 1966. He married his childhood sweetheart and the love of his life, Sandra Odom Coburn, in 1967. He proudly served his country for more than 28 years in the United States Navy. He enlisted in 1968 and was selected for an officer training program, retiring as a Captain in 1997.
