Gerald M. “Jerry" Reed passed away on Monday, February 3, 2020. He was 84.
Jerry was born in Buckhannon, West Virginia, to the late Foreman and Nora Belle Reed on November 6, 1935. He proudly served his country in the United States Marines Corps during the Korean War and later joined the United States Air Force where he served in Vietnam; he retired having attained the rank of Captain. Subsequent to his military retirement, Jerry worked in Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base with maintenance and propellers in the “Prop Shop” before retiring from there, as well.
In his free time, he enjoyed doing yard work and tinkering around the house; he was a hard worker both professionally and in fun. He learned how to fix just about everything! Jerry also enjoyed watching Westerns, James Bond movies, and classic television. He was an avid baseball fan and a lifelong Detroit Tigers fan, but would follow whichever team was from the state that he lived in at the time; the Atlanta Braves were his most recent favorite. Jerry had a funny, but dry sense of humor, and a sweet spot for all animals, especially dogs. He named all of his four-legged friends “Brownie” for lack of coming up with creative pet names.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Corbin, Freeman, Charles, Willard, and Ray Reed; and his sister, Evelyn Miller.
Jerry is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Sally Reed; son, Mark Joseph Reed (Jody); grandchildren, Ivy and Chase Reed; sisters, Marion Boothe (Tom), Phyllis Wilfong, Rosie Hughes, and Naomi Criss; and several adoring nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, February 10, 2020, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with Reverend Lucie Perkins officiating. Jerry will be laid to rest in Parkway Memorial Gardens following the service.
