Capt. Harold Glenn Powers, Sr., Usaf (Ret)

September 28, 1918 — December 7, 2013

Captain Harold Glenn Powers, Sr., 95, peacefully joined his wife and Lord on Saturday, December 7, 2013.

Capt. Powers was born on September 28, 1918 in Adams, Wisconsin to the late Leo and Josephine (Moshure) Powers. He was predeceased by his wife of nearly sixty years, Mary Margaret Johnston Powers, and two brothers, Charles Powers and Cecil Powers. He was a long-standing member of First Presbyterian Church in Warner Robins, serving as both Deacon and an Elder.

He left home at the age of fourteen to complete high school and supported himself during his teen years by working as a janitor and a bowling alley attendant. He loved to dance, and as a young man, he and his brothers frequented the local dance hall to show off their Polka skills.

Harold joined the Army Air Corps in Chicago, Illinois in 1939. He later transferred to Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, where he joined the Army Air Corps Cadet Program and learned to fly. He soon met the woman who became his wife. Married on April 8, 1943, he always joked that Mary Margaret simply married him because he was the only man she ever met that she wasn't related to, and he carried her picture in this wallet every place he went. Those places included serving in World War II as a pilot, in Korea and Japan during the Korean War, and at several Air Force Bases throughout the United States, eventually retiring from Robins Air Force Base in Warner Robins, Georgia in 1960.

He was known by his family and friends as a quick-witted, conservative, hard-working, generous and tenacious, but very caring man, who loved to play (and win!) a good game of poker, drink a cold beer, and watch sports on TV. Harold couldn't resist a delicious home-cooked meal and loved a well-made steak or waffles and bacon. He could always be counted on for a laugh or a lecture, and he would often get a twinkle in his eyes that meant he was about to say something mischievous.

Capt. Powers is survived by his children, Peggy Jo Powers Veal (Alan Kolbe), Betty Ann Powers Lonard Barree (Edward), and Harold Glenn Powers, Jr. (Marsha); eight grandchildren, Kenneth Lonard (Catherine), Penelope Alves (Robert), Phoenix Hardin (Paul), Amber Giltz, Paul Wood (Felicia), Athena Kolbe, William South (Jennifer), and Mary Ann Massey (Jayson); fifteen great-grandchildren; brothers, James Powers (Mary) and Lester Powers; sister, Selma Powers Jinks; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Wednesday, December 11, 2013, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A graveside funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 12, 2013 in Andersonville National Cemetery with interment immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given to First Presbyterian Church Warner Robins, 1139 Watson Boulevard, Warner Robins, GA 31088.
