Carl Francis Canfield was born December 9, 1942 in Warren, Ohio. His parents were Lyle Canfield and Julia Moriarty Canfield. His parents, brother and sister preceded him in death.
Carl is survived by Wanda Lousie Canfield of West Portsmouth, Ohio. They were married for fifty-six years and have three sons, Carl Jr. and wife Patricia, Stephen and wife Mary and Mark, as well as six grandchildren, Carl III, Kelly, Rachel, Stephen Jr., Mary Margaret and Christopher.
Carl graduated from Newton Falls High School, Newton Falls, Ohio in 1943, joined the U.S. Navy and served with distinction as a radio man during several campaigns in the Pacific Theater of W.W. II. A graduate of the University of Chicago for Telecommunications, he earned a bachelor of science degree from Marietta College, Marietta, Ohio.
Carl met Wanda in 1946 during leave from the U.S. Navy, while visiting relatives in southern Ohio. Wanda completed nurses training at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, Minn. Later they were engaged and married June 12, 1948.
Carl was employed by Goodyear in their heavy water program in Oak Ridge, Tenn. and Waverly, Ohio. Carl worked for an international engineering consulting company during the 1960s developing freshwater water projects in conjunction with USAID. Projects included managing design and construction of dams, pipelines and purification plants for potable water in the developing world, primarily Nigeria, for four years.
His family accompanied him and resided in Ibadan, Nigeria. Upon returning to the United States, Carl served as Chief Engineer for the Metropolitan Water Board in N.Y. until his retirement in 1987.
Carl was a loving husband and father as well as an adventurous person and avid sportsman. These adventures took him and his family to many exotic and exciting places. He was actively involved with organizations including, The Masons, Elks, American Legion and NRA.
