On the morning of Monday, March 20, 2023, our beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, Carrie Blount Kerney, died peacefully at her residence, at the age of 85.
Carrie was born in Jackson, TN on February 24, 1938 to the late Willie and Mary Donegan Blount. She wed the late Ben Peter Kerney and proudly became a devoted military wife and mother to two daughters and three sons. Carrie retired from DESC in Dayton, OH with 30 years of Civil Service and enjoyed over 20 years as a successful Avon representative, however, she was not content to sit around in her retirement. She kept busy while serving as a school crossing guard and in security at a college.
Additionally, Carrie was a longtime, devout parishioner of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and was a member of the Council of Catholic Women and the Black Catholic Ministry. She dedicated much of her free time to volunteering at the church’s school and in the church office, as well. To boot, Carrie was a member of Toastmistress International and a lover of all people. She relished the opportunity to help countless individuals with rides to work, picking up groceries, etc. over the years. In her free time, Carrie enjoyed reading mysteries, solving crossword puzzles, raising household plants and spending time with her family.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Darrell Kerney; and siblings, Willie Blount, Jr., George Blount, Ruth Shannon, David Blount, Robert Blount and Emma-Terri Foster.
Those left to cherish Carrie’s memory are her loving children, Phylliss Grane (Andrew) of Warner Robins, Ronald and Jeanne Kerney, both of Atlanta and Robert Kerney of Chicago, IL; grandchildren, Craig Kerney (Anita) of Valdosta, and Ben Abrams, Candace Lane and Jennifer Abrams, all of Atlanta; great-grandchildren, Selina and Carlita Kerney, both of Valdosta; sisters, Evelyn Phillips of Baton Rouge, LA, and Elizabeth Malone (Paul) of Indianapolis, IN; brother-in-law, James Foster of St. Louis, MO; two generations of nieces and nephews.
A Rosary will be on Friday, March 24, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. with visitation following until 7:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 25, 2023, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, with Monsignor Fred Nijem and Deacon Jim Hunt officiating.
