Charles “Pap” Ray Holt Sr., 77, quietly went to be with our Lord on Saturday, November 26, 2005.
Charles R. Holt. Sr., born July 22, 1928 in Hilham, Tennessee, was one of twelve children of Garland and Maggie Holt.
He was predeceased by his loving parents Garland Mann Holt and Maggie Rich Holt: brothers Waymon Carr Holt, Edmund Hugh Holt and James Eubert Holt; sisters Elphia Edith Brown and Lucille Brown; and grandson Richard Gresham.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Sadie Wooden Holt, five children Cynthia Holt Alexander (Michael) of Macon, Charles R. Holt, Jr., (Angie) of Warner Robins, Cheryl Naja (Hassan) of Atlanta, Cathie Holt Wood (Bobby) Warner Robins, and Clay Holt (Cindy) of Roberta; grandchildren Christy Sims (Robbie), Stephen Daniels, William Gresham, Charles R. Holt, III, Amy Leggett (Mel), Sami Naja (Carrie), Zein Naja, Mimi Naja, Jenny Sisson (David), Chris Teal, Jenny Williams (Jim), and Melanie Wood, eleven great grandchildren; sisters Ruth Fannin (Art), Kay Day (Jody), Wynelle Taylor, Virginia Brown and Glenna Hokem (James); brothers Sonny Holt, Huston Brown and Carson Holt (Marylee).
Mr. Holt lived in Warner Robins since being stationed at Robins Air Force Base in 1947. During World War II, he was stationed in the Philippines. Charles, as well as six of his eleven siblings, served their country during war times. After his tour of duty, he was stationed at Robins Air Force Base where he settled in Warner Robins and met his bride of 56 years and the love of his life, Sadie. He retired from an honorable career in civil service at Robins Air Force Base after 42 years and during which, was recognized as the recipient of the Civil Servant of the Year award in 1974. Pap built his life around family, friends, and the community that he loved so much. A former Warner Robins City Council member, Mr. Holt took pride in being politically active and participated in numerous civic organizations including: Volunteer with the Area Agency on Aging, Democratic Party of Houston County, AARP Driving Instructor for 15 years, Pioneer Club of Houston County, premiere Master Gardener, class of 1987, Georgia National Fair “Faircracker,” a Rivet with the American Rosie the Riveter Association, and most recently re-elected as a Silver-Hair Legislator, Houston County, Georgia.
Community service, sense of humor, kindness, a gentle spirit and love was the heart of this wonderful man who so easily became endeared to those who met and knew him, always choosing to see the good in everyone.
Gardening was his favorite hobby and his life is a testament of a man who planted seeds of kindness during his lifetime. He loved simple pleasures like a good cup of coffee, but most of all, his greatest joy other than friends and family was his 30 years service as Pastor of Elberta Baptist Church. The members of Elberta Baptist Church were his other family and he loved them so very much.
Loved by many, Pap was especially loved and adored by his children and grandchildren, and particularly idolized by his seven year old granddaughter Melanie. Melanie, like so many others, will be a better person for having been so lovingly influenced by her grandfather.
Pap always said “a man could not be more loved by his children” and that statement could not be truer – his children and grandchildren are thankful he knew and felt the love they have for him. Pap looked forward to the day he would reunite with his loved ones in Heaven and embrace our Lord Jesus Christ and yet he leaves behind so many who will grieve his absence here on this earth.
Services for Pap will be held on Wednesday, November 30, 2005 at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Visitation will be Tuesday, November 29, 2005 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
