Charlie Edwards, 77, entered into rest on Monday, April 22, 2024.
Charlie was born on January 10, 1947, in Cuthbert, Georgia to the late James E. and Katheline Hammock Edwards. His father, Jim, was 83 years old when he was born. Jim was a peanut, cotton, and corn farmer who was named Farmer of the Year at one point in his life, and passed away when Charlie was the tender age of 6. His mother was 32 years old at the time of his birth and passed away just a year after his father in a house fire caused by a wood stove. Charlie, along with his two brothers, Idus and Gene, were then sent to Thornwell Orphanage in Clinton, South Carolina. He spent seven difficult years there from 1955 to 1962. At age 14, he left the orphanage to live with his older brother, Frank in Salem, Alabama. They eventually moved to Jones County, Georgia where Charlie began playing 9th grade football.
Charlie cherished any time he could spend with his family, especially his grandchildren. When his children were younger, he often coached their baseball teams. With a giving demeanor, Charlie was a selfless man. He enjoyed playing the lottery in hopes of being able to give it all away to those he loved. In his free time, he could be found enjoying some quiet time in nature, fishing. Charlie will be deeply missed by those he loved most.
In addition to his parents, Charlie was preceded in death by his daughter, Connie Lynn Lawrence, grandson, Logan Varnadoe, and siblings, Frank Edwards and Lily May Edwards.
His memory will forever be treasured by his children, David Smith (Nikki), Terra Elstun (Greg), Jason Varnadoe, and Troy Varnadoe (Melissa); grandchildren, Kasey, Andrew, Zack, Chelsea, Hunter, Alex, Brenden, Aiden, Sidney, Gracie, Haley, and Peyton; siblings, Anne Will Edwards, Jim Edwards, Gene Edwards, and Idus Edwards; along with 13 great-grandchildren and many other loving family members and friends.
