Cindy Spencer, born Carlieze Wilbanks, died on Saturday, December 21, 2013, at the age of 84. A Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 26, 2013, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment following at Woodlawn Cemetery with a private family gathering in Eastman, Georgia.
She was born in Eastman, Georgia, the daughter of John T. Wilbanks and Annie Wilbanks. She was preceded in death by her husband, Judge R. Thomas Spencer, Sr., and by her grandson Scott Spencer. Survivors include her sister, Jan Fountain, four sons--Tom, John, Bill, and Kelly--three daughters-in-law--Pam, Cheryl, and Carolyn--five grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
Cindy was a natural-born teacher and a tireless advocate for the disabled. She loved family above all and considered almost everyone as her children. In retirement she was a volunteer church organist and choir director, an avid reader and lover of crossword puzzles, and her grand obsession was cooking for family and guests.
She was founder and director of The Houston Speech and Hearing School, which for over twenty-five years educated children with hearing impairments, delayed language, learning disabilities, and multiple handicaps. She also worked with the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill of Central Georgia as its director, as vice president of its Board of Trustees, as an instructor of Family-to-Family courses, and as founder of Plantasia/Seeds of Hope Gardens.
After earning her bachelor's degree from Mercer University, she taught at several schools: Sacred Heart in Warner Robins, St. Joseph's and Mount DeSales in Macon, St. Michael's on Tybee Island, Eastman Elementary, Preparatory High School in Brunswick, and Loudonville Elementary in New York.
In 1968 in Warner Robins, she was selected as both Woman of the Year and Homemaker of the Year.
