Cmsgt. Martin Hollis

CMSgt. Martin Hollis, USAF (Ret), 90, passed away on Sunday, July 30, 2006. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 2, 2006 in Andersonville National Cemetery. The family will greet friends at the cemetery following the service.

CMSgt. Hollis was born on May 1, 1916 in Hamilton County, TN. In July 1971, CMSgt. Hollis retired from The United States Air Force after 31 years of service. He also retired later (1981) after being employed by the United States Postal Service for nine years. He was a veteran of World War II, the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Era. In WWII, he flew 31 missions as a turret gunner on the B-24 bomber. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters. In the Korean Conflict, he was superintendent of maintenance for the F80’s and P-51’s. In the Vietnam Era, he was superintendent of maintenance for B-52’s. He received many medals during his 31 years of military service. Despite his very active career and numerous demands upon his time, he was first and foremost a family man. He loved to be with his family. CMSgt. Hollis was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde and Curley Adams Hollis, sisters, Ladenia Smith, Gertrude Smith and step-son, David Hodgson.

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years, Shirley Hollis, Warner Robins; sons, Paul Hollis (Sandra), Austell; Mark Hollis (Kathy), Macon; sister, Clara Johnson, daughter-in-law, Joanna Hodgson, grandchildren, John Hodgson, Deborah Hodgson Geib, Rebecca Hodgson Spear, Heather Hodgson Ross, St. Joseph, MI; Noel Hollis, Austell; and four great grandchildren, St. Joseph, MI.
