Col. Joseph L. Solomon, Jr., USAF (Ret.), 85, died Monday, June 2, 2003. Visitation will be Thursday, June 5, from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the First United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 205 N. Davis Dr, Warner Robins, GA 31093, or to the American Heart Association, Houston County Division, 134 Cherren Dale Dr., Warner Robins, GA 31088.
Born in Cleveland, Miss., Col. Solomon was the son of the late Joseph L. Solomon, Sr., and Louella Solomon. A veteran of thirty years in the United States Air Force, he set up air traffic control patterns for the Berlin Airlift during WWII. The Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico was built and commanded by Col. Solomon. In 1970, he was a commander with NATO in Turkey. He also was commander of the 5th MOB at Robins Air Force Base before his retirement in 1971. He was a member of First United Methodist Church in Warner Robins.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Solomon, Warner Robins; son, Joseph A. Solomon, Marine on St. Croix, Mn.; twin daughters, Sandra Martinez and Linda Fountain, both of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Scott Sell, Wisconsin; Travis Sell, Minneapolis, Mn.; Renee Martinez, Macon; Amn. Aaron Fountain, USAF, Lackland AFB Texas; and Alan Fountain, Warner Robins; great grandson, Hunter Sell, Wisconsin; and numerous nieces and nephews.
