Doris Lucille Lucas

October 25, 1920 — March 12, 2009

On March 12, 2009 at 2:58 a.m. our mother passed from this life into the awaiting arms of Jesus Christ our Savior and Father in Heaven.

She was born October 25, 1920 the third child of Leo Bennett and Lucille Parker Kight in Lovett, Georgia. She was educated in the Lovett-Brewton School, graduated in 1938, went on to Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College and majored in Education. She started her teaching career at the same school she attended in Lovett. In 1941, she met our father Leroy "Luke" Lucas, who was in the United States Army Corp stationed in Savannah. They dated and became engaged prior to him leaving for the war in the Pacific Conflict. She had to wait another four years to hear from or about him as he was captured and forced to participate in the Batton & Corregidor Death March and to a POW camp where he was enslaved by the Japanese in Kobe, Japan, until all living POW's were rescued and the war ended. They were married on February 22, 1946, in a double ceremony with her sister, Iris Kight and Archie Shipes, married at the same time. Within a year, she and Luke began their family with the birth of their first child with three more to follow later. She stayed home and raised her children until 1958, and started teaching in the Houston County School System where she taught for her entire career at Westside Elementary School. During that time, she received her Masters Degree in Education at Georgia College in Milledgeville. She was a long time member of Liberty Methodist Church in the Rutland Community of South Bibb County. She was also a member of Eastern Star. The way we remember her is a devoted God fearing wife, mother, grandmother and friend.

She was predeceased by her husband, Luke; sons, Ken and Bob Lucas; brothers, Earl and Doc Kight; and sister, Iris Shipes. She has left to cherish her memory her son, Harry (Gina) Lucas ; daughter, Celia (Sal) Vinterella; grandchildren, John Lucas, Wes Lucas, Keith (Laura) Lucas, Lauren (Trevor) Linn, Ashton Lucas, Betsy Lucas and Kathy Bartlett; and five great-grandsons, Kai Lucas, Chandler Linn, Alex Nichols, Justin Nichols and Tyler Bartlett.

Visitation will be Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 15, 2009 at Liberty United Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Northview Cemetery, Dublin, Georgia. Contributions may be made to Liberty Methodist Church, 6511 Houston Road, Macon GA 31216.
