Warner Robins – Doris Pauline Walter, 83, gourmet cook, midwife to farm animals, business entrepreneur, homemaker and world traveler…her long journey is now over. She passed away on Monday, August 23, 2004 at the Laurel Baye Healthcare Center in Macon, Georgia. Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 25, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with interment following in Glen Haven Memorial Cemetery. A rosary service will be held at McCullough Funeral Home at 7:00 pm on Tuesday with visitation following until 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to Portsbridge Hospice, 115 Arkwright Landing, Macon, GA 31210.
Mrs. Walter was born in Dallas, Texas to Sante Fe Railroader, William E. Dobbins and school teacher, Margery Holley Dobbins. She attended public schools in Wolfe City, Texas and graduated high school in 1938 from Fair Park High, Shreveport, Louisiana. She married Billy Walter, a private in the Untied States Army Corps in 1940. She graduated from Beauty School in Shreveport and opened her own Salon in nearby Bossier City. She successfully owned and operated her business until 1948, when she left to join her husband, M/Sgt Billy Walter, and family in Guam. The family later served a tour in Libya, North Africa. Doris and Billy retired to a farm in Byron, Georgia and became active in community life. Billy refereed sports, joined the Lions Club and Doris became a nursemaid to sick farm animals, raised peacocks and cooked gourmet meals for the Byron Lions Club for over 20 years. She was a charter member of the Byron Lioness Club who dedicated their cookbook “Cooking with the Lioness” to her. Following Billy’s death in 1991, Doris lived in Byron and enjoyed a serene retirement until illness struck. She will be missed most by her buddies, Loretta Scofield, Frances Helton, Shirley Mosley and Sue Allmon.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents William E. and Margery Dobbins, husband Billy Walter, daughter, Margery Smith, granddaughter, Pamela Denise Smith. She is survived by daughter, Paula Hague of Macon, Georgia, brother Dr. Delaney Dobbins, Kerrvile, Texas, grandson, William Hague of Marco Island, FL, granddaughters, Sheri Lynn Hague of Orlando, Florida, Michelle Smith of Warner Robins, GA
