Dr. Leonard Wallis Bell

Dr. Leonard Wallis Bell, well-known Houston County Optometrist, died May 12, 2003 in a Miami Hospital. He was 76 years old. Memorial services will be held on Saturday, May 17 at 4:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. The family will greet visitors one hour prior to the service starting at 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to the American Heart Association, 134 Cherren Dale Dr., Warner Robins, GA 31088, or to the Southern College of Optometry Scholarship Fund, 1245 Madison Avenue, Memphis, TN 38104.

Born in Americus, Georgia, Dr. Bell was the son of the late Dr. Walter L. Bell, Sr., and Thelma Bell Wilkinson. He graduated from Southern College of Optometry in 1950 and practiced Optometry in Middle Georgia for 53 years. Dr. Bell was active in the Sixth District and Georgia Optometric Societies. A graduate of Lanier High School, he attended Mercer University for his pre-Optometry studies and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order. He attended the Geselle Visual Child Development Center at Yale University and was a Fellow in the American Academy of Optometry. He lectured extensively in Europe and South America.

In World War II, Dr. Bell served in the US Navy on the battleship USS Washington and participated in the post-war Red Carpet service, bringing servicemen home from England to New York City.

Dr. Bell is survived by his wife, Mary Jo; sons, Michael E. Bell (Anna) of Richmond, Va.; Thomas L. Bell of Deltona, Fla.; Richard Bell of Deltona, Fla.; daughter, Beverly Garrett (Jerry) of Warner Robins; stepson, Scott Lingelbach (Kim) of Warner Robins; and grandson, Brent Bell. He is also survived by a brother, Dr. Walter L. Bell, Jr., (Kate Marie) of Macon, Ga.
