A dedicated husband, father, and grandfather, Dr. Robert “Bob” Edward O’Connor, Ph.D. entered into rest on Sunday, August 27, 2023, at his residence in Warner Robins, Georgia.
Dr. Bob O’Connor was born in Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, to the late Ralph M. and Aliene Simbeck O’Connor. He received his undergraduate from Florence State University before earning his Doctorate in Plasma Physics from Auburn University. Dr. Bob O’Connor was employed at Sparta, where he used to mentor young scientists at his job and retired with the esteemed title of Senior Scientist. He later became a Professor of Physics at Auburn University.
Dr. Bob O’Connor's passion for Auburn Softball and Grissom Soccer was unwavering. He proudly cheered on the Auburn Tigers, but his truest pride and joy were his beloved wife, children, and grandchildren. Their accomplishments were his aspirations, and he supported their goals, hopes, and dreams, with a boundless and unshakeable love. Dr. Bob O’Connor's commitment extended to his community as well. He had a love for the local arts and sciences. His involvement with the YMCA's program The Indian Guides lead him to be voted Chief of the Nation in Huntsville, Alabama. Dr. Bob O’Connor also took solace in nature’s embrace at his lake house while feeding the birds and squirrels.
In addition to Dr. Bob O’Connor’s parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Maurice, Tim, and Jerry O’Connor; and sisters, Wanda Reeves, Wilda Dowden, Barbara Wiley, and Jean Fowler.
Dr. Bob O’Connor is survived by his wife, Ruth O'Connor; children, Michelle O’Connor Leary (Keith) and Karen O’Connor Singleton (Scott), all of Warner Robins, as well as Michael Owen O’Connor of Byron; grandchildren, Hannah Lauren Woods, Hayden John Woods, Parker Scott Singleton, and Chase Braden Singleton, all of Warner Robins; sisters, Patricia (Pat) McRedmond of Nashville, Tennessee, and Karan Lyons of Florence, Alabama; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family members and friends.
A celebration of life will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, September 5, 2023, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, the family of Dr. Bob O’Connor will receive friends at The Farmhouse at McCullough, located directly behind McCullough Funeral Home with light refreshments served.
