Mrs. Edna Earl Hampton was born January 16, 1928 to Ernest Flunoy and Katie Mae Sales Flunoy Jackson in Buena Vista, Georgia. She was educated in the Marion County school system and as an adult joined Fairview C.M.E. Church of Fort Valley, Georgia.
On May 25, 1946, she married Willie B. Hampton Jr. and remained in that union until his death on February 27, 1969. To this union, seven children were born, including Freddie Hampton, Eula M. Solomon (Darryol), John W. Hampton (Debra), Azzie L. Oates (Larry), Mary L. Hampton, and Evelyn Cleveland (Gary-deceased)—all of central Georgia. Their daughter, Eva M. Hampton, preceded them in death.
Ms. Edna, as she was affectionately called, was a homemaker for most of her life. She was known to "fry it, dye it, and lay it to the side" with the best press and curl around. She was also an accomplished seamstress and cook, known for the homemade biscuits that she cooked every morning.
Later in life Ms. Edna decided to pursue a career outside of the home. At age 59 she was certified as a nursing assistant and began working at the Fort Valley Nursing Home, where she worked for over twelve years. She was passionate about her job and very well-liked.
In addition to her children, Ms. Edna leaves to fondly cherish her memory four sisters—Silver E. Day (Felton-deceased), Queen Esther Hill, Lula Bell (John), and Doretha Davis. Her sister Rosa Vincent and brothers, Walter Flunoy, Tobie Jackson, and John W. Jackson preceded her in death. She also leaves two sisters-law—Marie Coley and Gussie Mae Coley, both of Cochran, Georgia. Her sister-in-laws Maggie Riggins and Fannie Johnson preceded her in death.
A devoted and well-loved grandmother, Ms. Edna leaves behind sixteen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. She also held dear to her heart, Billy McKenzie, Bobby McKenzie, Shirley Hollis, Evelyn Smith (Paul), and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Ms. Edna will forever be remembered as a strong, determined woman who was a loving mother, a devoted wife, and the "neighborhood grandmother." She will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
