Elizabeth "Betsy" Chernault Steed, 78, passed away on Wednesday, January 4, 2012 after an extended illness.
Born in High Point, North Carolina, on January 26, 1933 to the late Martha and Clyde Chernault, she was the sister to Martha C. Howard, Charlotte, North Carolina. Betsy attended school in High Point and Sullins College in Bristol, Virginia. Married to Jack Steed on November 8, 1952, they thoroughly loved being married to each other and were the parents of Angie Kivett (Charlie), Greensboro, North Carolina, Cindy Hektner (Mark), Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, and Mary Reese, Tampa, Florida. She also reared two grandchildren, Ashley Delk, Atlanta, and Gregory Pike, who is currently serving in the United States Army. Her other grandchildren are Elizabeth Karnosky and Whitney Pool, both of Greensboro; and Hunter Hektner, Palm Beach Gardens; and two great-grandchildren, Harlow Delk, Atlanta, and Chloe Pool, Greensboro.
Betsy lived with her family all over the United States and, also, in Europe for four years. After her children were grown, Betsy was employed by the Robins Elementary School as secretary for twenty years. She loved children and was the school's greatest booster. Before this, she served as a substitute teacher for the Houston County School System. Being intensely patriotic, Betsy was the impetus for the school's annual program "We Love America". Known for her pleasing disposition and charm, she was loved by the school's parents and children, and by those with whom she was associated. During tragedies and illnesses experienced by Air Force families, she was the first to provide material and moral support. Betsy was awarded the Jane Shirley McGee Award as Educator of the year by the Air Force Association. She also loved the Air Force and served it, as a volunteer, all over the U.S. and in Europe. A member of Christ United Methodist Church in Warner Robins, she served it in various roles until her health began to decline in 2004.
Visitation will be Thursday, January 5, 2012 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, January 6, 2012 at Christ United Methodist Church, Reverend Richard Soper officiating. Interment will follow in Andersonville National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations to Christ United Methodist Church, 511 Russell Parkway, Warner Robins GA 31088.
