Emma “Polly” Harlow Gillis, 96, entered into eternal rest on Thursday, January 11, 2018.
Mrs. Gillis was born on September 28, 1921 in Webster County, Mississippi to the late James Andrew and Annie Elizabeth Caples Harlow. She resided for many years in Alamo, Georgia, and has resided in Houston County for the last 11 years. A telephone operator, substitute teacher, and a homemaker, she was a member of Alamo United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star. Mrs. Gillis was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Woodrow Gillis; her daughter, Wilma Ann Gillis; her son, James Neal Gillis; her brothers, Elmer Lee Harlow, James Edward Harlow, and John Edward Harlow; and her sister, Clara Harlow Gann.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her daughter-in-law, Hilda Gillis of Bonaire; her granddaughters, Kristi Hollars (Bill) of Montara, California, and Echo Westbrook (Lawrence) of Athens, Georgia; her great-grandson, Jackson Neal Hollars; and numerous nieces and nephews.
The funeral service celebrating Mrs. Gillis’s life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14, 2018, at Alamo United Methodist Church in Alamo, Georgia. The family will receive friends at the church from 1:30 until 2:30 p.m. Following the service, Mrs. Gillis will be laid to rest next to her husband in the Alamo City Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests that memorial contributions be made to The Methodist Home for Children and Youth, P.O. Box 2525, Macon, Georgia 31203-2525; the Alamo United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 629, Alamo, Georgia 30411; or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
McCullough Funeral Home and Crematory and Towns Funeral Home of Alamo have the privilege of being entrusted with Mrs. Gillis’s arrangements.
