Retired MSGT Ernest Higgins was born January 16, 1942, in Milltown, Alabama. He joined Hopewell Baptist Church at an early age. He graduated from Five Points High School in Five Points, Alabama. He enlisted in the United States Air Force where he received numerous awards and commendation for his 20 years of honorable service in the military. After retiring, he served 20 years in Civil Service at Robins Air Force Base. In his spare time, he enjoyed manicuring his yard, but his passion was fishing in order to feed all of his family and friends. He was also a master when it came to a game of cards!
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Webster and Lillar Mae Higgins, and his brothers, John Freeman Higgins, James Lee Higgins, and James Hudson.
His memory will forever be cherished by his loving and devoted wife of 56 years, Nellie Ruth Higgins; his daughters, Ramona Higgins, Felica Billings (Jeffrey), Stephanie Wilkins, and Sierra Johnson; his honorary son, Tony Laney; his siblings, Myra Higgins, Willie Lewis Higgins (Dorothy), Jimmy Lee Higgins (Nancy Ann), Sanders Higgins (Sheila), Alford Hudson (Priscilla), and Benny Higgins (Rose); in-laws, Minnie Pearl Laney (James), Joe Lee Hardnett (Fannie), Charles Hardnett (Bonnie), Douglas Hardnett (Cathy), and Randy Hardnett (Brenda); special friend/buddy, Charlie Billings; along with 6 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 19, 2023, from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 20, 2023, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Ernest will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.
