Eugene Johnson, Jr., 70, passed away at his residence on Tuesday, June 8, 2021.
Eugene Johnson, Jr. was born on October 12, 1950, in Eastman, Georgia. The son of Mrs. Annie Mae (Crawford) Johnson and the late Mr. Eugene Johnson, Sr., Eugene was the second oldest of eight siblings. On July 21, 1973, he married his wife, Mrs. Katherine (Smith) Johnson; they were wedded for nearly 48 years. From their union came three sons, Eugene Johnson, III (Althea), Jimmy Lee Johnson, II, and Karl Spencer Johnson (LaWanda).
His memory will forever be cherished by wife, Mrs. Katherine (Smith) Johnson; eldest son, Eugene Johnson, III; two daughters-in-law, Althea Johnson and LaWanda Johnson; and six grandchildren, Eugene (IV), Evan, Quantavious, Adara, Nathan and Ashtyn, to all of whom he dedicated the song, “The Wind Beneath My Wings.” His grandchildren affectionately called him “Shoopa” and thought of him fondly. Eugene is also survived by his mother, Mrs. Annie Mae (Crawford) Johnson; siblings, Jimmy (I), Bruce, Barbara, Vanessa (Lesley) and Mattie; as well as a host of aunts, uncles, cousins, and extended family members and friends.
Eugene was preceded in death by his two youngest sons, Jimmy Lee Johnson, II, and Karl Spencer Johnson; father, Eugene Johnson, Sr.; brother, Willie James Johnson; and sister, Mary Thomas.
Visitation with Eugene’s family will be Monday, June 14, 2021, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. The funeral service celebrating his life will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Tuesday, June 15, 2021, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with Pastor Josh B. Kirvin, Sr. officiating. Following the service, Eugene will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of Eugene Johnson, Jr. to First Baptist Church of Garmon Street, 210 Garmon Street, Warner Robins, Georgia 31088.
