Evelyn Dowdy Ross

Evelyn Dowdy Ross, 92, died on Friday, November 26, 2010. A kind and generous soul with a gift for loving people, she lived a full and happy life until the very end. She was much beloved by family, friends, students, and all who knew her.

Mrs. Ross was born on May 10, 1918, in Pitts, Georgia and was raised mostly in Fitzgerald, Georgia. She graduated from Norman Junior College and received a bachelor's degree from Tift College in Forsyth. A resident of Warner Robins since 1955, Mrs. Ross taught in Houston County for thirty-two years. Respected and loved by students and peers alike, she was inducted into the Houston County Educators' Hall of Fame in 2009. She also taught Sunday School much of her adult life, leading hundreds of children and youth in the paths of righteousness. For nine years she taught at the International Language School at Central Baptist in Warner Robins. She also volunteered for many years at Christian Social Ministries, a community faith-based food bank. She was a faithful member of Central Baptist Church and, in previous years, of Evergreen Baptist Church. Mrs. Ross was preceded in death by her husband, Abram "A.D." Ross; her son, Dan Ross; and her parents, Robert and Lydia Dowdy.

She is survived by daughters Betsy Rogers (Delacy) of Perry and Nancy Holley (Buddy) of Warner Robins, and daughter-in-law, Elena C. Ross of Warner Robins; grandchildren, April Tew (David), Melanie Murphy (Wayne), Jonathan Rogers (Lou Alice), Natalie Keadle (Chad), Jason Ross (Lindsay), Aaron Holley, Emily Greer (Nathan); and nineteen great-grandchildren.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 28, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Monday, November 29, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at Central Baptist Church with interment following at Magnolia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering at Central Baptist Church, 1120 Lake Joy Road, Warner Robins, GA, 31088 or to the Houston County Retired Educators Association Scholarship Fund, 303 Bernard Drive, Warner Robins, GA, 31093.
