It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beautiful mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother, Flor De Maria Chavarria. Born in Puntarenas, Costa Rica on January 14, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Victor and Flory Hernandez Chavarria. She passed away on Tuesday, January 18, 2022, at the age of 76.
An exuberant, lively, vivacious, and extroverted strong woman, Flor simply loved to talk and be with people. She was extremely determined and would set a goal; nothing could stop her. As a single mother, Flor pursued a nursing career and pressed on to become one of the earliest nurse practitioners. She endured through three children who were far less than idyllic and at the end we all were at her bedside.
Flor traveled to her birth home, Costa Rica, to Tahiti, and much of Europe. In this last year, she traveled much of the USA (just her and her dog), in her minivan. In her travels, she enjoyed camping out in the natural and beautiful wildernesses of our country. Flor took on and raised several grandchildren for periods of time. She was also able to love on two great-grandchildren. Though her health was deteriorating, she plowed forward with that great determination with which she led her life. For decades Flor treasured God’s Word, spending hours daily listening to John MacArthur and others preaching and teaching the truth from the Holy Bible.
She is survived by her brothers, Jerry and Jose Chavarria; her sisters, Marta Mekbel, Ana Torres, and Leda Chavarria; her children, Enrique Sotela, Lydia Sotela, and Greg Galvis; her grandchildren, Marcelo Puerta, Anabella Iturria-Sotela, Esteban Iturria-Sotela, Jordan Sotela, Megan Sotela, Trevor Sotela and Tristan Sotela; her great-granddaughters, Rowen Swindle and Marcella Puerta; as well as many nieces and nephews whom she loved greatly.
A memorial gathering will take place at the Ingleside Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Saturday, January 29, 2022 from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. A memorial service celebrating her life will immediately follow in the Chapel of Ingleside Baptist Church at 11:00 a.m.
