Floreida Judge Harrell entered into rest on Monday, March 9, 2009.
Born in Sylvester, she attended Wesleyan College where she studied Voice. On July 1, 1956, she married Albert M. Harrell, Jr. and they subsequently made their home in Warner Robins. Floreida volunteered with the Miss Georgia Scholarship Pageant Association for the past twenty-three years eventually becoming a Field Director for Miss Georgia in 1989. From 1995 to 2006 she served as the traveling companion to Miss Georgia as she competed in the Miss America Pageant. A devoted supporter of the Miss America Organization, Floreida gave countless hours of her time, as well as her resources, to various state franchises. This devotion culminated with her nomination as "Volunteer of the Year" by the Miss Georgia Pageant Committee in 2007. In recognition of this honor and of her devotion, the Directors of the 2009 Miss University of Georgia Pageant created the Floreida Harrell Miss Congeniality Scholarship whose recipient, selected by the contestants, inspires all, shows friendship to all, and epitomizes the ideals of the Miss America Organization. Floreida exhibited these characteristics and looked for the best in every young woman competing in the pageant.
She also carried these characteristics in her work as a part-time teacher for the Houston County Board of Education, where she was involved in the annual plays of Russell Elementary School. She called Central Baptist Church her church home and was active on the church decorating committee and sang in the choir for thirty-six years. Her sister, Marjorie Rhodes, and parents, Tom Judge and Lucie Mae Reynolds Judge, preceded her in death.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her loving husband, Albert M. Harrell, Jr.; sons, Al Harrell and spouse, Claire Chason, Cairo, and Michael Harrell, Atlanta; daughter-in-law, VaRee Harrell, Warner Robins; grandchildren, Brock, Bailey, Levi and Sophia Harrell; and nieces, Debbie Henson, Greenville, South Carolina, and Pam Sellars, Meigs.
Visitation will be Saturday, March 14, 2009 from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at Central Baptist Church.
Memorial services will be held at 3:00 p.m., on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at Central Baptist Church, Dr. Owen Bozeman officiating; visitation will precede the service from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., in the church. A private interment will take place at a later date in Hillcrest Cemetery, Sylvester.
