Florence Ailene “Polly” Smith Carranza passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 1, 2021, at the age of 87.
Born on July 16, 1933, in Dublin, Georgia, Polly was the daughter of the late Alvin and Lucille Hubbard Smith. She married her best friend, the late John Carranza in the mid-1960s. Together they proudly opened their own restaurant in Macon, Polly’s La Mesa, Inc. on Pio-Nono Avenue. After her husband’s passing, Polly continued to serve up many delicious delicacies and operated the business for a total of 16 years until her retirement in 1992. She supported law enforcement and first responders by offering them half-priced meals. Polly enjoyed cooking and was the best at it.
In addition to her parents and husband, Polly was preceded in death by her daughter, Patricia Ann Jones; sisters, Frances Brown Dodd and Jonnie Rountree; and brothers, Ralph, Jack, Gene, and Wiley Smith.
She is survived by her children, Patricia Ann Jones, Kathy Elaine Purvis, Stephen Alvin Ross, Michael David Ross; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; sister, Thelma Stanford; as well as several beloved great-great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
Visitation with Florence’s family will be Wednesday, July 7, 2021, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. The funeral service celebrating her life will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Polly laid to rest at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens at a private graveside service.
