Gervaise Wynn Perdue

April 30, 1926 — August 14, 2016

Gervaise Wynn Perdue, of Carlyle Place, Macon, formerly of Warner Robins, died August 14th, 2016. Visitation will be held Friday, August 19th from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held at First Baptist Church Warner Robins at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 20th. She will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.

Born April 30, 1926, in Irwin County, Georgia, she was the daughter of the late James Washington Wynn (1887-1969) and Celia E. Ranew Wynn (1898-1974). Gervaise had four late siblings: O'Neal Wynn, Venton Wynn, Melvin Wynn, and Nell Wynn Arthur, all of Turner County, Georgia. Gervaise was a member and Sunday School teacher for many years at First Baptist Church in Warner Robins.
She married David Alfred Perdue, Sr. on June 4, 1947. They lived in Warner Robins for more than fifty years. He died in 1997, having served honorably in WWII and the Korean War, and having spent over 40 years in education as principal of several schools and as the Superintendent of the Houston County School System for 20 years.

Gervaise is survived by three children: David A. Perdue, Jr. (Bonnie), Sea Island; Dennis B. Perdue (Lane), Marietta; Deborah Perdue, Atlanta; grandchildren: David A. Perdue, III (Danielle), Westport, Connecticut; Blake Perdue (Charlotte), Raleigh, North Carolina; Brian Perdue and Bryce Perdue, both of Marietta; Brandon Perdue (Channing), Hope Mills, North Carolina; Capt. Barrett Perdue (Julie), Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; great-grandchildren: Triston, Talon, Ashlyn, Wyatt, Georgia, Hudson, David IV, and Jack Perdue.

Gervaise earned the following degrees: Bachelor of Science, University of Georgia; Master of Science, Mercer University; 6th Year Special Education and 7th Year in Gifted Education and Supervision, University of Georgia. She spent 31 years in the Houston County School System where she taught in both elementary and high school. Gervaise initiated the Houston County Gifted Program and served as Director until she retired in 1982. She also taught Gifted Education, History, and Geography courses at the University of Georgia. She served as a consultant in Gifted Education in many Georgia school systems, as well as in Texas, Minnesota, and several other states.

Honors that Gervaise received included the National Teacher of the Year from the American Association of Geographic Education; Recipient of the Georgia Delta Kappa Gamma Scholarship; the National Science Foundation Scholarship; and the Houston County "Gervaise Wynn Perdue Gifted Teacher of the Year" award which was named for her and is awarded annually to a Houston County Gifted Teacher. She was also inducted into the Houston County Teacher Hall of Fame.
Gervaise enjoyed traveling to over 50 countries. Her main hobby was genealogy. She published a Perdue Family History, among other genealogies. She proved her lineage to be a member of the Georgia Pioneer Descendants, Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims, Colonial Dames XVII Century, Washington Family Descendants, Order of Washington, Magna Carta Dames, Friends of St. George's England, Knights of the Most Noble Order of the Garter, Americans of Royal Descent, The Colonial Order of the Crown, Descent from the Emperor of Charlemagne, and the Plantagenet Kinds of England.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to First Baptist Church of Warner Robins, 1135 Watson Boulevard, Warner Robins, Georgia, 31093, the Alzheimer's Association, 886 Mulberry St., Macon, GA 31201 or to the charity of the donor's choice.
