Gisela Marie Emmi Myers, 74, died suddenly and unexpectedly on Monday, January 20, 2003, at Houston County Medical Center in Warner Robins, Georgia. A native of Germany, Gisela married Elbert Myers and moved to the United States in 1951 where she gained American citizenship. In 1960, the family moved to West Point, Mississippi, with Elbert’s army assignment as advisor to the National Guard.
Preceded in death by her husband in 1971, Gisela decided on a teaching career and began attending Mississippi State University where she graduated with honors, no simple feat as her German schooling was disrupted by the hardships of World War II. In 1973, with her degree in hand, she moved to Warner Robins, Georgia, and began her 29 years of teaching. Mrs. Myers, as she was known, taught high school French and German to several generations of students at Northside High School and was presently teaching at Houston County High. A hard working, fair, and well-respected teacher, Gisela put her heart and soul into her students, her school, and all its associated extra curricular activities. She challenged people exceed their expectations and achieve their best - no more so than what she exhibited and expected of herself.
Gisela was a dedicated sister, wife, mother, and grandmother and is survived by her sister: Ursula Bernhart and brother-in-law Rolf of Bremerhaven, Germany; her sister-in-law: Christel Strauch of Bremerhaven, Germany; many other German relatives; her three sons: Ralf and daughter-in-law Patricia of Mill Valley California; Dan and daughter-in-law Debbe of Atlanta, Georgia; and Steve of Warner Robins, Georgia. Her grandchildren, Matthew, Amanda, and Teddy brought as much joy to her life as she brought to theirs. They were the apples of her eye.
Gisela enjoyed the camaraderie of her many, many good friends, enjoyed her travels both far and near, and enjoyed her many hobbies - not the least of which was her love of clocks, crystal, and china. She will be sorely missed by all who know her. Her tireless concern and care, her giving hospitality, her warm and loving laughter, and her heroic triumphs over life will be forever in the minds and memories of many.
Fulfilling Gisela’s final wishes, her body was cremated. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to the Gisela Myers Scholarship Fund established at Houston County High School. The family will greet friends and relatives during the visitation on Friday, January 24th, from 7 until 9 PM at McCullough Funeral Home located at 417 South Houston Lake Road. A memorial service in celebration and remembrance of Gisela’s life will be held on Saturday, January 25th, at 2 PM at McCulllough Funeral Home.
