Gloria Joan Acres, 89, entered into rest on Tuesday, August 13, 2024.
Joan was born on September 27, 1934, in Oneida, Tennessee to the late Wayne and Arizona Elliott. A dedicated and faithful Christian, her steadfast faith was her life. She was a longtime member of Oakland Baptist in Warner Robins, Georgia, Central Baptist Church in Warner Robins, Georgia, Franklin Street Baptist Church in Centerville, Ohio, and First Baptist Church in Madisonville, Tennessee. While at Oakland Baptist, Joan started both the GAs and Acteens programs and later, while at Central Baptist, she started the cancer pad program, helping to make thousands of pads for those in need. Joan had a true servant’s heart and was involved in the church in any capacity that she was able. WMU was her life, she enjoyed her involvement in VBS and GAs, she was a Sunday School teacher in several states, and deeply loved church fellowship where she often took charge of any banquets that arose, and enjoyed seeing others find joy in worship. She was a true prayer warrior and prayed for anyone and everyone whenever there was a need.
Joan genuinely loved life and never met a stranger. Always the hostess, she was a great cook who enjoyed feeding those she loved, whether her loved ones or often bringing a meal to those who were sick or otherwise afflicted. She loved her family deeply and did everything for them.
In her free time, Joan enjoyed a variety of interesting hobbies. She often volunteered for the Special Olympics, and would help out whenever needed with her children’s sports teams, Girl Scouts or school. She was a fabulous, renowned artist who held multiple awards in several states and was a member of art associations in Utah, Ohio, Georgia and Tennessee. Her warm countenance and sweet spirit will be deeply missed by all those she held dear.
In addition to her parents, Joan was preceded in death by her grandchildren, Tyler Acres and Katie Acres, siblings (and brothers in law), Jane Keen (Ralph Keen), Bill Elliott, Joyce Dodson (Bill Dobson), and Sherra Miller, mother and father-in-law, Milford and Eva Acres, brothers and sisters-in-law, Hoit Acres and his wife, Mary Lou, Joyce Davis and her husband, Bud, Harold Jeffers, and Tom Trammell.
