Helen Claire Byrd, 91, of Centerville, entered heaven’s gates on the morning of Saturday, January 18, 2025. She was a devoted wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.
Born in Vienna, Georgia, Helen was the daughter of the late Berry J. and Flora L. Hughes McDowell. She graduated from Vienna High School in 1950. Helen married Dan Byrd, Sr., in 1952, with whom she shared a loving marriage and raised a son. Helen's dedication to her family was unconditional, and she always provided a sanctuary for her family. After her son’s formative years, Helen worked as a clerk typist for several years at Robins Air Force Base until her retirement. She then spent a number of years serving with the Epilepsy Association of Warner Robins.
A longtime member of Green Acres Baptist Church, Helen was a devout Christian whose faith was at the center of her life. She also a former member of Central Baptist Church. Her commitment to the community extended beyond her church, as she was also a proud member of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Pilot's Club.
Helen’s love for her family was unwavering, and she cherished the memories of camping trips, especially those to Vogel State Park. She was a gifted quilter, an avid bowler, and a lifelong reader. Her spirit was feisty and determined, and she found great joy in spending Thursdays playing cards with friends at the church.
In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her siblings, Erlene Sibley of Moreland, and Betty Morgan of Perry.
Her memory will forever be treasured by her husband, Dan Byrd, Sr.; and son, Dan Byrd, Jr., both of Centerville.
