Henrietta McIntyre, 91, of Warner Robins, passed away peacefully at her home on August 8, 2016. Henrietta was born in Lincoln County, Georgia and grew up with her 7 brothers and sisters on a family farm near the Double Branches community. She graduated from Lincoln County High School and attended Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville. In 1944, she moved to Warner Robins with two of her sisters, where they worked at Robins Air Field. There, she met Robert "Mac" McIntyre, whom she married in 1945. After WWII ended, as many that had come to Robins Air Field in support of the war effort returned to their homes, Henrietta and Mac decided to stay and make Warner Robins their home. Thus began a dedication to her community that would last for over 70 years.
In the early days of Warner Robins, Henrietta worked at Southern Bell Telephone Company and was active in many of the community's first civic organizations. She helped organize and served as Chair of the Community Chest, now known as United Way. She was a charter member and President of the Pilot Club. Over the years, she served in a range of other civic groups including the Warner Robins Jaycettes, Little League Auxiliary, Pink Ladies Auxiliary, Civitan, American Red Cross, Air Force Association, Special Olympics and Christmas in April. Henrietta and Mac were both committed to helping those in the community that were in need in any way.
When Sacred Heart Catholic Church was founded in Warner Robins, Henrietta and Mac were some of the earliest parishioners. She brought her service ethic to her church and served as communion minister for many years, as well as serving in many other roles. She was recognized by the Diocese of Savannah in 2003 with the Bishop Gartland Award, in honor of her service to Sacred Heart Parish and the Catholic Church in South Georgia. From 2003 – 2007 she served as Chair of the building committee for the newly constructed Church that now serves as the parish home.
Henrietta's love of her community led her to seek public office. She was elected to the Warner Robins City Council in 1974 and served five terms on city council. Through her career in city government, she became involved in several state-wide organizations including the Georgia Municipal Association, Georgia Fireman's Standards and Training Council, and the Middle Georgia Police Academy Council. For many years, she was active as a member of the Georgia Peace Officers Standards and Training Council and served a term as Chair of that organization. She had a special place in her heart for those that dedicated their careers to public safety. She served as Acting Mayor of Warner Robins from 1993-1994, after which she retired from her political career. In 2012, Henrietta was a member of the inaugural group inducted into the Warner Robins Hall of Fame in honor of her contributions to the community over the years.
Most of all, Henrietta loved her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2002. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Debbie McIntyre of Bainbridge GA; sister Rebecca (Pat) Mahaffey of Warner Robins; brother Joseph (Ruzelle) Glidewell of Lincolnton; her beloved nieces and nephews that grew up down the street from her in Warner Robins, Brenda (John) Bowen, Mike (Paula) Kelley, Ricky (Wanda) Kelley, and Bonnie (Richard) Morris; and numerous other nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, as well as members of her late husband's family, from around the South.
Rosary and visitation with Henrietta's family will be held at McCullough Funeral Home, on Wednesday, August 10 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 11. Following the service, Henrietta will be laid to rest in Magnolia Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given to the Sacred Heart Church Building Fund at 251 South Davis Dr. Warner Robins, GA 31088.
