Henry Augustus Groves, Sr.

May 29, 1919 — January 22, 2004

Celebratory worship services will be held in honor and memory of Henry Augustus Groves, Sr., 84, of Warner Robins at Central Baptist Church at 2:00 pm on Sunday, January 25, 2004 with the Rev. Sidney Odom officiating. Interment will be in Magnolia Park Cemetery. The Lord, his shepherd, called home another member of His flock on January 22, 2004 to henceforth enjoy everlasting life and bliss. Even though he will be sadly missed, solace is taken in his God-guaranteed eternal destiny.

Throughout his life, Mr. Groves instilled his cherished values of love of God, love of church, love of family, love of country and love of friends. He was an industrious, peacable and law-abiding man. He was universally loved by his friends and neighbors.

Mr. Groves, the son of Willie and Lucille Mobley Groves, was born in Byromville, Georgia on May 29, 1919, the third of six children. His family later moved to Orlando, Florida, where he was educated. He learned the value of honesty, integrity and hard work starting in his childhood working at his father’s grocery store. These values served him well for a lifetime as he worked until he retired after 35 years of service as a cataloging supervisor at Robins Air Force Base. He was loved, respected, and admired by all who knew him.

He met, courted and married his bride of 57 years, Elizabeth J. Groves on March 11, 1946. Together they lovingly begat two children, Linda Ann Groves Johnson and Henry Augustus (Gus) Groves, Jr. Linda resides in Dublin, Georgia and is married to Dr. Hugh Johnson with whom she lovingly begat three children, Amy Catherine Johnson of Boca Raton, Florida; Rodney Marc Johnson of Augusta; and Brian Hugh Johnson of Dublin. Gus resides in Warner Robins and is married to the former Joyce Hill with whom he lovingly begat a son, David Groves of Goshen, Indiana.

In addition, he is survived by three sisters and one brother: Carolyn Galletly of Bonaire; Lucille Flomerfelt of Oak Ridge, North Carolina; Betty Trammell of Stone Mountain; and Edwin Groves of Homosassa, Florida. He was preceded in death by his brother, William Groves.

Mr. Groves initially worshiped at the First Baptist Church. When the Central Baptist Church was conceptualized, he was actively involved in bringing it to fruition becoming a Charter Member. He taught Sunday School for forty years. Afterwards, he continued to be actively involved in participatory worship for the rest of his life always showing faith by his works. Although quiet and reserved, he was always willing to be called upon to get the job done. After his health began to decline, he accepted with Christian patience and quiet resignation his required curtailment of involvement. However, he continued with Bible reading, study, current event analysis and physical exercises as permitted. He chose to “wear out rather than rust out”.

Although we grieve at his absence, we are comforted by knowing that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them that are the called according to his purpose. We pray and know that the same God who has taken Mr. Groves to live in Glory will tenderly guard the remainder of the family until we all find shelter in the heavenly fold.
