Herman W. Peavy

January 26, 1939 — January 22, 2021

Herman Winston Peavy entered his heavenly home on Friday, January 22, 2021, in Blairsville, Georgia.

Herman was born on January 26, 1939, in Cordele, Georgia, the only child of the late Ira Winston Peavy and the late Mary Lou Yawn Peavy. He lived in Cordele until he was 11 years old when his father went to work at Robins AFB, Georgia and the family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia.

Herman was a 1957 graduate of Warner Robins High School where he enjoyed participating with the baseball and basketball teams. He also graduated from Middle Georgia College, and received his undergraduate and Master’s Degree from Georgia College and State University.

Herman was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served three years during the Vietnam era. He was employed at Robins AFB for a total of 35 years, giving him a total of 38 years federal service. He worked in WR-ALC civilian personnel and retired from personnel at HQ AFRC.

Herman wanted to be remembered as “a good Christian man” because he certainly was that. He was a member of Central Baptist Church for 36 years, serving as a Sunday School teacher, was on the youth council, and served as a deacon. He moved to Tybee Island, Georgia for 17 years and recently moved to Blairsville, Georgia.

Herman was an active member of the WRHS Band Boosters, serving as President for many years while his daughters were members of the Dixie Demon Marching Band.

Herman was an avid gardener, providing his family and friends with plenty of fresh vegetables. He also loved gardening around his home. He was known for his rose gardens at his home in Bonaire, serving as a test grower for Jackson & Perkins Roses. Herman was a specialist in orchid growing, grafting many of his own flowers.

Herman and Phyllis operated a small antiques business for many years. Herman’s passion became restoring good quality furniture. He loved bringing new life back into furniture that had been abused or neglected. He became an expert on restoring old furniture, giving it a second chance.

Herman’s greatest joy was in his family. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis. They were looking forward to celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in August 2021. Herman and Phyllis were blessed to have three daughters, Miriam P. Shuler (Kirk) of Savannah, Kelly P. Bright (Paul) of Blairsville, GA, and the late Shannon P. Knopes. They greatly enjoyed watching their seven grandchildren grow up: William Winston Bright (Becca) of Warner Robins, Joy Shannon Bright of Blairsville, Hope Rebecca Bright of Blairsville, Luke Henry Bright of Blairsville, Garrett Spencer Shuler of Savannah, Cameron Shannon Shuler of Athens, Carson Philip Shuler of Savannah; and great-granddaughter, Avery Katherine Bright of Warner Robins. Herman was happy to have many cousins.
