Mrs. Irene Taylor Underwood passed away Saturday, January 17, 2004 after a brief illness. Graveside services will be held at 3:30 pm on Wednesday, January 21, in Magnolia Park Cemetery. Visitation will be Tuesday from 7:00 until 9:00 pm at McCullough Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Born in 1929 in Shelby Gap, Kentucky, Mrs. Underwood moved to the Warner Robins area with her husband in 1966 after his retirement from the Army. Together they toured many countries in the service of their country. She was retired from the nursing field. She attended nursing school in Baltimore, continued her education at Wesleyan College and received her Bachelor of Arts from Georgia College in Milledgeville. After working in many area hospital and nursing homes she began her own personal care business, Underwood Personal Care, Inc. Through this work she brought much happiness and joy to people in their golden years. Mrs. Underwood served on President Jimmy Carter’s Council for Alzheimer’s for several years. She was also a long-time member of the Eastern Star, Fort Hawkins Lodge. Her parents, John and Woney Taylor, and siblings, Cecil Taylor, Ceford Taylor, Connie Motes, Ollie Rabun, and Arline Courtney, all preceded her in death.
Survivors include her husband, Tom Underwood, Sr., Fort Valley; sons, Tom H. Underwood, Jr. (Kandy), Lizella; John H. Underwood Sr., (Brenda), Fort Valley; sisters, Bernice Brummett, May West, Marie Shoemate; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
