Iver Louis Granum

September 2, 1918 — July 2, 2012

Iver Louis Granum, former Robins Air Force Base civilian employee and longtime resident of Warner Robins, died on July 2, 2012. He was 93.

Born in Baker, Montana, to Norwegian immigrants Louis (Lars) and Bessie (Berit) Granum, he grew up in Los Angeles, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1937 and Los Angeles Community College in 1939.

In 1940, after brief stints as a draftsman at Los Angeles-based aircraft manufacturers Northrop and then Douglas, he joined the civil service as a draftsman at Hickam Field at the Hawaiian Air Depot, now Hickam Air Force Base, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

During the Dec. 7, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor, he left his off-base apartment to go to Hickam Field and assist with firefighting and salvaging government property, and for his actions that day was one of about 80 personnel awarded the Department of the Army's Commendation for Meritorious Civilian Service. In Hawaii, Granum met public health nurse Eleanor Randel, originally from McCook, Nebraska, and they married in Honolulu in 1948.

Granum was later a civilian quality control specialist at Air Force bases in Dayton, Ohio; Mobile, Alabama; and Memphis, Tennessee, before transferring to Robins Air Force Base in 1958.

He was a founding member of Westminster United Presbyterian Church in Warner Robins; a former member of Toastmasters International, Warner Robins; and a former member of the Houston County Library Board. For more than 20 years, he owned and operated Houston Auto Auction in Macon, selling the business in the mid-1980s. Granum was a member of the Dayton, Ohio, Millennium Masonic Lodge No. 779 since 1951, and was a 32nd degree Mason with the Valley of Macon Scottish Rite.

He lived in Warner Robins until 2005 when he moved to Carlyle Place in Macon. The family wishes to thank the staff of Carlyle Place for their kind and considerate care of him in the latter stages of his life.

In addition to his wife of 64 years, he is survived by their three sons: Rex (Susan) Granum of Washington, D.C.; Fred (Pat) Granum of Portland, Oregon; and Tom (Doris) Granum of Athens, Georgia, as well as six grandchildren: Alexis Granum, London, England; Amanda Granum, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.; Erik Granum, San Diego, California.; Mark Granum, Portland, Oregon; Meg Granum, Atlanta, Georgia; and Mary Winn Granum, Athens, Georgia.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 6, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, Warner Robins, the Reverend Dr. Glenn Gilstrap officiating. A reception will follow the service. Entombment will be in Magnolia Park Mausoleum at 1:30 p.m.
