Jack Edward Smith

November 30, 1943 — August 8, 2024

Byron

Jack Edward Smith, a cherished husband, father, and papa, peacefully passed away on Thursday, August 8, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was 80 years old.

Born on November 30, 1943, in Walterboro, South Carolina, Jack was the son of the late William Edward and Mary Virginia Herndon Smith. After graduating from Pompano Beach High School, he earned a business degree from Florida Atlantic University. Jack dedicated his professional life to management roles, including his tenure at Warner Robins Supply. Beloved by the entire McCullough staff and community, Jack served with compassion as a funeral attendant at McCullough Funeral Home for several years. Of the Christian faith, he was a devoted member of Central Baptist Church.

A passionate outdoorsman, Jack was widely known for his deep love of nature. Whether riding horses, tracking deer through the woods, or hunting quail with his son and grandsons, Jack took delight in the great outdoors. His enthusiasm for the open air was only matched by his loyalty to Tennessee football and his signature cowboy boots. Jack’s greatest love was reserved for his family and friends, all of whom will dearly miss him.

In addition to his parents, Jack was preceded in death by his sister, Frieda Hiers.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Carla McLean Smith of Byron; his children, Scott Smith of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Stacy Smith Phillips of Warner Robins; grandchildren, Tanner Phillips (Carson) of Warner Robins, Hunter Phillips of Warner Robins, and Shelby Kate Phillips Lucas (Hollis) of Madison, Hannah Reese Smith of Hendersonville, Tennessee, and Lily Grace Smith of Hendersonville, Tennessee; great-grandchildren, Jack Henry Phillips, Margo James Phillips, and McLean Cooper Lucas; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and other dear family members and friends. The family would like to thank the staff of Heart of Georgia Hospice for their kindness and compassionate care.

A memorial gathering with family and friends will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024, from 12:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. A memorial service celebrating Jack’s life will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Jack will be laid to rest privately.
