In the late evening hours of Wednesday, July 19, 2017, James E. “Jim” Gibbs, 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior.
Jim was born on September 19, 1930 in Macon, Georgia to the late Charles and Dovie Collins Gibbs. For four years, and with great pride and honor, he served his country in the United States Navy during the Korean War. He worked for thirty-four years in civil service at Robins Air Force Base before retiring as a Support Equipment Specialist Chief. In the 1950’s Jim was instrumental in establishing the Warner Robins Babe Ruth Baseball League. He was a leader in the Elks Lodge for more than sixty years and had an exuberating passion and drive for supporting the Elks Aidmore Children’s Hospital. In 2016, he was given the incredible honor of being inducted into the Elks Grand Lodge. Jim lovingly served the Lord at Trinity United Methodist Church where he had been a longtime member.
In addition to his parents, Jim was preceded in death by his siblings, Charles “Chuck” Gibbs, Joseph “Joe” Gibbs, Ruby Willis, and his first wife, Mary S. Gibbs.
His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 16 years, Mary Edenfield Gibbs of Bonaire; children, Charles E. Gibbs (Sylvia) of Kathleen, Faye G. Cofield of Warner Robins, John H. Gibbs (Becky) of Perry, Patricia G. Garcia (Orlando) of Edgartown, Massachusetts; stepchildren, Scott Edenfield (Leigh Ann) of Kathleen, Ron Edenfield (Connie) of Fort Myers, Florida, Greg Edenfield of Warner Robins, Vicki Lacey (Sebie) of Kathleen; 15 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ralph “Ray” Gibbs (Shirley) of Keysville, Virginia.
Visitation with the family will be held Friday, July 21, 2017 from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services celebrating Jim’s life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Trinity United Methodist Church. Following the service, Jim will be laid to rest in Glen Haven Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be given in memory of James “Jim” Gibbs to Elks Aidmore Inc, 2394 Morrison Road, Conyers, Georgia 30094 or to Trinity United Methodist Church, 129 South Houston Road, Warner Robins, Georgia 31088.
