James Edward Mason, Sr., a loving husband, father, granddaddy, and great-granddaddy, passed away early on the morning of Sunday, January 14, 2024, at the age of 91.
Mr. Mason was born in Montgomery County, Georgia. On August 5, 1956, he entered into a 65-year-long marriage with his loving wife, Betty Sue Holton.
Mr. Mason served his country with honor as a member of the United States Marine Corps. Enlisting on January 21, 1953, he dedicated three years of his life to serving his nation before receiving an honorable discharge on January 20, 1956. In 1958, Mr. Mason moved to Warner Robins, where he became a longtime resident. Soon after moving to Warner Robins, Mr. Mason started his employment on Robins Air Force Base. He served as part of the Civilian Security Police for 17 years and later worked as a C-130 Hydraulic Specialist until he retired in 1987.
In addition to his military and civilian service, Mr. Mason was an active and giving member of his community. He volunteered with the Boy Scouts, contributing his time to camping trips and engaging in activities with his sons. His commitment to the development of youth extended beyond the Boy Scouts, as he was a member of the Woodman of the World Organization and actively participated in their youth programs.
Since 1979, Mr. Mason was also a member of the Masonic Tyrian Lodge III, and a member of the Scottish Rite of Warner Robins.
James was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Holton Mason; parents, James Hamilton and Sallie Mae Meeks Mason; brother, Bobby Mason (Shelby); son-in-law, Ricky Arp.
His memory will forever be treasured by his children, Suzanne Clarke (Michael) of Bonaire, Sherri Mason Arp of Milledgeville, Jonny Mason (Martha) of Tampa, Florida, and James E. Mason, Jr. of Hawkinsville; grandchildren, Jimmy Mason (Michelle), Michael Mason (Hannah), Nathan Arp (Hannah), Emily Arp, Ashley Clarke Smith (Walker), Kristen Clarke, Payne Tripp (Layla), and Savannah Mason; nine great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Tuesday, January 16, 2024, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Mr. James Edward Mason, Sr. will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery.
