James “Jim” S. Mason, 74, passed away on Saturday, February 12, 2005 at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 15, at First Baptist Church Centerville with interment following in Centerville Cemetery. Visitation will be 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 14 at McCullough Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to First Baptist Church Centerville, 108 Church Street, Centerville, Georgia 31028.
Mr. Mason was born in Byromville (Dooly County) in 1930 and was a long time resident of Centerville and Houston County. He retired from Robins Air Force Base and was owner and manager of Jim Mason Construction Company and Vanora Realty. His record of service in both church and civic groups was extensive. He was a charter member of the Houston County Development Authority and had served since 1973. He was also a member the first Houston County Planning and Zoning Board. Mr. Mason served two terms as council person for the newly established City of Centerville, was instrumental in securing a municipal water system and helped in setting up a Police Department where he served as a part time police officer for a short period of time.
As a member of First Baptist Church Centerville, Mr. Mason served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher and trustee. He also served on the Long-Range Planning Board, the Building Committee and the Benevolence Committee.
Mr. Mason attended Lanier High School in Macon where he played football and placed second in the State One-Mile Distance Competition. He also served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
He is survived by his wife, Ann B. Mason; his children, Vanessa Turner (Brock), Lenora Gregory (David), and Durwyn Mason, all of Houston County; his grandchildren, Amy, Joel, and Kristy Gregory and Ross Turner; two sisters, Dorothy Patterson (Pete), Salem, Alabama and Doris Robinson, Melbourne, Florida.
