TSgt. James “Sax” Warren Saxon, USAF (Ret.), 89, entered into rest on Thursday, October 10, 2024.
Sax was born on October 4, 1935, in Ware Shoals, South Carolina. After graduating from high school, he proudly enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving with distinction in the Strategic Air Command. Over the course of his 21-year military career, he achieved the rank of Technical Sergeant. Following his retirement, Sax transitioned to a civilian role at Robins Air Force Base, where he worked as a Jet Engine Aircraft Mechanic, applying his skills and dedication to the aviation industry.
An avid bass fisherman, Sax earned the distinction of being the first Lifetime Honorary Member of 26 Bassmasters, reflecting his passion for the sport. He was also a proud member of Mabel Lodge #255, where he held the esteemed titles of 32 Degrees and a 50-year Mason, embodying the principles of brotherhood and service. A faithful man, Sax was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in Centerville, where he found strength and fellowship within his community. His legacy of service, friendship, and faith will be cherished by all who knew him.
His parents, Ariel Grady Saxon and Virginia Bernice Saxon, and brother, A.G. Saxon, Jr. and his wife, “Boots”, preceded him in death.
His memory will forever be treasured by his loving wife of 70 years, Betty A. Saxon; children, Ginny Newberry (Dale) and James W. Saxon, Jr. (JoAnn); grandchildren, whom affectionally knew him as Papa Sax, Denny Newberry (Kelley), John David Smith, Jr. (Sonya), James Newberry (Mia), Sarah Marie Rentz (James), Katie Elizabeth Alexander (Michael) and James Warren Saxon, III (Jamie); along with 11 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 17, 2024, from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. A funeral service will immediately follow at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home. Afterward, Sax will be laid to rest in Magnolia Park Cemetery with full military honors and masonic rites.
