Janetta "Nita" Kunkel

Janetta "Nita" Sanders Kunkel, 89, entered into rest on Thursday, May 27, 2010.

Mrs. Kunkel was born on September 28, 1920, in Cordele, GA. After attending Palm Beach Jr. College, she later received her nursing degree from Southern Baptist Hospital in New Orleans. She worked for Houston Medical Center and the Perry Hospital as night supervisor for thirteen years before retiring. Her various club and social memberships included being Past President of Beta Sigma Phi; Past Grand Esther of the Order of the Eastern Star and Past Matron of Martha Berry #351; Past Queen of the Daughters of the Nile; Past Mother Advisor, International Order of Rainbow for Girls; and Past President of the Officers Wives Club, where she was honored as a RAFB Officers Wife of the Year. Her favorite hobbies included duplicate bridge and volunteering at the Warner Robins Senior Center in ceramics. Of the Baptist faith, her church home was the Robins Air Force Base Chapel. Her parents, Green Sheppard Sanders and Rosa Lee Ewing Sanders; and sister, Lee Ewing Sanders, preceded her in death.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her loving husband of sixty-seven years, Lt. Col. William Roy Kunkel (USAF, Retired); children, Konni Lea Atwood (Ray), Somersworth, NH, Karyn Lynn Peskosky (Mike), Charlotte, NC, and RDML Kurt Lance Kunkel, USN (Patti), Woodbridge, VA; grandchildren, Hank, Becki, John, Nick, Stefanie, Nic, Veronica, Emma and Sara; and great-grandchild, William.

Visitation will be Saturday, May 29, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 30, 2010, in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home, Chaplain Capt. Jeffrey McMillen officiating. Interment will follow in Magnolia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be made to the Grand Chapter-OES, P.O. Box 5820, Alpharetta GA 30023 – memo line: Cancer Fund in memory of Janetta Kunkel.
