Jeanne Marie Polk Murray

July 12, 1927 — January 18, 2025

Jeanne Marie Polk Murray, 97, entered the gates of Heaven on the evening of January 18, 2025.

Jeanne was born July 12, 1927, in Washington, D.C. to the late James K. and Gretchen Polk. She married Walter Mars, and they were blessed with four children. Later in life, Jeanne married Albert Murray.

Jeanne was proof positive that the Lord doesn’t give you more than you can handle. After being widowed by her beloved first husband, who was thirty-seven at the time, she was tasked with raising four young children on her own and was an exceptionally loving and creative mother. Despite the trials and tribulations of her circumstances, her children were her greatest pride, and her faith kept her strong. Jeanne was uncommonly beautiful and was concise with her words while always keeping a sense of humor. She was devoted to her second husband Albert, and together they enjoyed their time in Baja Mexico, a place near and ear to her heart, Montana and finally at the Villages in Lady Lake, Florida where Albert left to take his place in heaven.

Jeanne moved to Pittsfield, Massachusetts to be closer to her son, Billy. In later years she moved to Warner Robins, Georgia and lived near her two sons, Dan and Stephen and their wives.

While in Mexico, Jeanne, fell in love with hummingbirds and catered to them wherever she was. She loved plants and flowers. Jeanne collected all kinds of seashells and displayed them for everyone to enjoy along with her Polish pottery. She was a great cook, and we will all dearly miss her apple pies with her homemade crust. Jeanne loved watching the western channel.

Jeanne was an avid reader and regularly recommended books to everyone she knew and loved. Her latest recommended book was The Sounding. She was a tremendous storyteller and loved recounting family history stories. Jeanne was a one-of-a-kind woman who spoke her opinions honestly and demonstrated her care and concern for her loved ones with thoughtful words, cards and mementos. Jeanne cared deeply for her family, friends and her Catholic faith. She said her rosary every day and sometimes multiple times a day. Jeanne had a prayer list with family and friends that she prayed for daily.

Jeanne was persistent and feisty in spirit, yet so warm, caring and loving. She will be missed beyond measure by all who knew her.

Our family would like to thank the wonderful caring staff at Antebellum Grove who treated Jeanne professionally and cared for her like family. She won over a lot of hearts there. Thanks to the nurses of Enhabit Hospice who also cared for her with dignity and treated her like family.

Jeanne was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands, Walter and Albert; daughter, Gretchen Block; son, Chief Daniel Mars, and brothers, William Polk and James K. Polk.

Her memory will forever be treasured by her sons, Billy Mars, of Stephentown, New York and Stephen Mars (Faye) of Bonaire, Georgia; and son in law, Chip Block of Denver, Colorado. Jeanne was exceptionally close to her nieces, Janette Yandrasits (Mike) and Dawn Zemper (Ted). She leaves behind many grandchildren, nieces, nephews and so man wonder friends. She loved them all.
