Jesse "De" Short, Jr., 62, left his world behind on March 4, 2012. He went to join his soul mate and wife of twenty nine years, Sharon, who preceded him in death in 2007. De was a much decorated Vietnam Veteran having served two tours with the 101st airborne Division. His awards include a Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Silver Star. The Silver Star was awarded "for conspicuous gallantry above and beyond the call of duty" for saving the life of a fellow soldier - under heavy fire - from a burning helicopter. He never thought of himself as a hero, but he returned from Southeast Asia a much changed man. De was medically retired from Beaulieu Carpet Mills in Adairsville, Georgia.
De was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Dewitt Short, Sr., and Hazel Mixon Short as well as his wife and a brother, Del Short, of Macon, Georgia. He is survived by a sister, Debbie Short Bennett of Kathleen, Georgia; and a brother, Darrell Jack Short, of Fall River, Massachusetts; his brother in law, Chuck Bennett, of Kathleen, Georgia; his son, Michael Short, of Florida; nieces, Jeanne Short, Macon Georgia; Alison Short, West Greenwich, Rhode Island; nephew, Josh Short, Macon, Georgia; and his beloved cat of fifteen years, Dewde.
Friends and family will gather in the home of Chuck and Debbie Bennett where De spent the last few years of his life. This event will be held at 178 Harner Road in Kathleen from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 10, 2012. The interment service will be private.
In lieu of flowers, thank a Veteran for your freedom.
