Jessie Yates (nee Gregory), 88, passed away at Summerhill Nursing Home in Perry, Georgia on December 12, 2011 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Jessie was born on December 22, 1922 to Walter and Nancy (nee Combs) Gregory in Haddix, Kentucky. She was the sixth child of nine children. Jessie attended school in Breathitt County, Kentucky and Berea College in Berea, Kentucky. It was at Berea that she met her future husband Henry B. Yates and they married on September 27, 1943. Jessie and Henry were married for over sixty-seven years. Henry preceded Jessie in death just four months ago.
Jessie was a telephone operator at AT&T in Dayton, Ohio and department head of Furs and Better Dresses for Elder-Beerman Department Store in Centerville, Ohio. Jessie was at her best being a Mom and a Grandma. Over the years, she supported her children actively in Girl Scouts and Cub Scouts, PTA projects, and Little League. Jessie was most proud of her children and grandchildren. Jessie and Henry both retired in 1980 and settled in Myrtle Beach. In their retirement, they enjoyed golfing together for the first time, and numerous visits with their children, grandchildren, and brothers and sisters. Jessie will be remembered by her family who loved her as a deeply caring, loyal, and supportive mother and grandmother.
Jessie is survived by her daughter, Pamela J. Yates and her husband Ralph Yates of Warner Robins; her son James H. Yates and his Partner Sheri A. Lippowitsch of New York City; her grandsons Matthew Altmeyer and Fred Yates of Warner Robins; and her granddaughters, Erin Altmeyer of Milledgeville, Georgia and Michanne Yates of Savannah, Georgia.
Visitation will be held Tuesday December 13, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. at McCullough Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, December 14, 2011 in the chapel of McCullough Funeral Home with internment following in Magnolia Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully suggests memorial donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association, P.O. Box 96011, Washington DC 20090-6011, www.alz.org, 1-800-272-3900.
