John D. Hatfield

October 23, 1943 — July 30, 2003

John D. Hatfield, Executive Vice President and Provost at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut died at his home in Wallingford on Wednesday, July 30. He was 59. The cause of death was non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma.

Born in Columbus, Ohio, Mr. Hatfield spent his childhood in Crestline, Ohio. In 1959 his family moved to Warner Robins, Georgia. Mr. Hatfield earned his B.A. at Mercer University in Macon, Georgia, his M.A. at the University of Georgia, and his Ph.D. at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana.

Prior to joining the University of New Haven in July, 2001, he was Dean of the Merrick School of Business at the University of Baltimore, Associate Dean at the College of Business Administration at the University of Central Florida, and Director of Graduate Programs in the Management Department at the College of Business Administration at the University of Georgia. Dr. Hatfield began his professional career as a high school English teacher in Warner Robins, Georgia.

During his academic career, Dr. Hatfield received fourteen teaching awards, including the University of Georgia’s highest teaching honor, the Josiah Meigs Award for excellence in teaching. He was recognized as an exceptional teacher both in and outside the traditional classroom, with small seminars, as well as groups of several hundred. He was the author or co-author of four books and more than fifty articles and papers dealing with human behavior in organizations. He served as consultant or trainer to a host of corporations, government agencies, and non-profit groups, and served for ten years as a speaker in Penn State University’s Executive Program Series.

Dr. Hatfield is survived by his wife of 29 years, Dr. Deborah J. Weider-Hatfield of Wallingford, Connecticut; his mother, Helen L. Hatfield of Columbus, Georgia; his brother, Warren K. Hatfield Jr. of Warner Robins, Georgia; his sisters, Cynthia H. Roberts of Columbus, Georgia, and Susan H. Gilbert of Phenix City, Alabama; and six nieces and nephews. His father, Warren Hatfield Sr., died in 1998.

Funeral services will be held at McCullough Funeral Home in Warner Robins, Georgia on Saturday, August 2. Visitation will begin at 12 noon, followed by a Chapel Service at 2 p.m. Interment will be at Magnolia Park Cemetery.
